India Post GDS Selection Process 2026: Check Merit List, Verification and Other Details

The India Post GDS recruiting Process 2026 is merit driven and it provides the candidates a recruiting pathway without any written examination. The Department of Posts has declared 23,757 provisional openings for the GDS Schedule-II, July-2026 cycle of the Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak posts. The selection of candidates for these rural postal posts will be based mostly on their Class 10 academic achievement. Hence it is necessary to understand the Selection Process since little mistakes in submitting marks or grades can damage candidature.

India Post GDS Selection Process 2026

Unlike many government recruitment examinations, the India Post GDS Selection Process does not include a written test. Candidates are shortlisted through a system-generated merit list prepared from their Secondary School Examination (Class 10) results. Marks are aggregated and calculated as a percentage, with the merit score taken up to four decimal places.

Where a candidate’s marksheet contains grades instead of marks, the grades are converted into marks using the prescribed multiplication factor of 9.5. For example, a Grade Point of 10 is converted to 95 marks. Where CGPA is provided, it is similarly multiplied by 9.5. If both individual subject grades and CGPA are available, the higher marks calculated under the prescribed method are considered.

Candidates must enter their Class 10 marks or grades exactly as they appear on the original marksheet. Incorrectly mixing marks and grades, or entering grades where marks are required, may result in cancellation or disqualification.

How Is the GDS Merit List Prepared?

The merit list is generated on the basis of eligible candidates’ Class 10 performance. In case two or more candidates have the same merit score, India Post follows a prescribed tie-breaking sequence. Date of birth is considered first, with the older candidate receiving preference, followed by the specified category and gender combinations. The Department has also retained the right to apply additional tie-breaking criteria where required.

Past work experience or previous service does not provide an advantage in the Selection Process, as such experience is not considered for GDS selection.

Document Verification After Shortlisting

Being named in the merit list does not immediately mean final engagement. Shortlisted candidates must undergo physical verification of their original documents before the Engaging Authority, generally the concerned Divisional or Unit Head. Candidates must establish their eligibility and the authenticity of the information submitted in the application.

Following successful verification, candidates receive an offer of provisional engagement. They then have to complete the prescribed pre-engagement formalities, which include three days of basic training and arranging the required accommodation. Final regularisation follows completion of antecedent and document verification.

Eligibility for India Post GDS Posts

Applicants must have passed the Class 10/Secondary School Examination, with passing marks in Mathematics and English, from a recognised board. They must also have studied the prescribed local language up to Class 10. Knowledge of computers and cycling, along with adequate means of livelihood, is also required.

The age limit is 18 to 40 years, calculated on the last date of application. Relaxation is available for eligible categories, including 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC and 10 years for PwBD candidates, with additional relaxation applicable to certain combined categories.

Key Dates Candidates Should Know

For the 2026 cycle, One-Time Registration is scheduled from August 31 to September 19, 2026, while applications can be submitted from September 2 to September 21, 2026, up to 5 pm. The correction window is scheduled for September 23 and 24, 2026, also closing at 5 pm. Any supplementary shortlist must be issued by December 31, 2026, when the engagement process closes.

With no written examination, Class 10 marks play a decisive role in the India Post GDS Selection Process. Candidates should therefore ensure that their academic details are entered accurately and that all original documents are ready for verification if they are shortlisted.
